Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council
Website Design
Flexibility is the path to success for a community-based nonprofit
The Opportunity
Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council is a nonprofit organization in Providence, RI dedicated to environmental conservation surrounding the Woonasquatucket River and the bike path that follows it. Their previous website had a noticeably outdated aesthetic and did not reflect the progressive look of their signage and shirt designs. The design was not responsive, making it dysfunctional for mobile users. Furthermore, it was cumbersome for the organization to edit and add to the site, so the site’s pages were often out of sync with WRWC’s latest initiatives. They approached us for a complete visual overhaul and a WordPress site built with user experience in mind.
Our Approach
Given the breadth of WRWC’s initiatives, they needed an engaging site to showcase what they do at a glance, while offering entry points to learn more about different programs. In addition to visually aligning with the organization’s brand, we engineered the site to be intuitive, streamlined and flexible. The site features a unique dropdown navigation which provides easy access to featured events and blog posts. Users can easily add different kinds of content—from plain text, to news, to detailed calendar events—with a variety of options for layout. Rather than build pages with a set structure, we created templates with a variety of layouts that allow for extensive customization and re-ordering.
Result
From a community member’s perspective, WRWC’s new site is much easier to navigate and is accessible from any device. With its clear informational hierarchy, the site is easier for community members to get involved in maintaining the Greenway and in conserving the river. From an employee’s perspective, the process of adding and editing content is streamlined and intuitive, allowing them to keep the site up-to-date with the latest information. The website now reflects the level of professionalism and quality WRWC brings to the Providence area. The organization is able to better promote its events and programs, now and for years to come!
